Horseracing highlights from this past weekend – who to keep an eye on and some impressive wins…
A full program of racing around the country kept horseplayers involved through the weekend. Highlights from a speed score perspective, included these stand-out performances:
Sea Cat (speed score 91+) got a deserved turn of fortune after some game efforts from wide draws in Graded races during the Cape season, and placing first in the fillies Guineas in a romp at Fairview.
Dancing Dynasty (s/s 99) came from last with a wet sail to victory of a modest handicap at Kenilworth, suggesting that picking up black type, perhaps in softer ground, is quite possible.
Gitiano (s/s 101) continued the fine run of trainer Alec Laird when placing first in a Conditions Plate over 1450m at Turffontein.
The progressive Captain Lars (s/s 97+) dominated the Drum Star Handicap from the front to win his 5th race from 12 starts - quite a transformation given that he was battling with breathing problems last year and racing at a much lower level.
Choir Maiden (s/s 104) easily won a MR 88 contest at Clairwood under "superman" Marcus to surpass her previous best score of 96. A rating above 100 is usually competitive in Graded fillies' features, so the improving Choir Maiden is worth watching as the KZN season gets underway.
Interbet punters are looking forward to 29th March with Super Saturday comprising high class racing in Gauteng followed by night time action during the World Cup meeting in Dubai. Top South African horses will be well represented on the big night.
